Nicky Bertran de Balanda: “How good was that?”

French bloodstock agent Nicky Bertran de Balanda could not believe it when A Plus Tard stormed to victory in the Grade 1 Cheltenham Gold Cup. “This is what you dream of when you buy a horse for a client,” he explained. “It’s just extraordinary. When we bought him we obviously didn’t know that he would one day win the Gold Cup, but we thought he would improve physically with age and that he would have the stamina for the big chases, so it’s a great satisfaction to see him do exactly that.” A Plus Tard was bought by a team of three people and he pursues: “Yes, I bought him together with Alex Elliott and Sebastien Desmontils from the Devin family.” A Plus Tard was not the only horse he had bought for his mainly English and Irish clientele and he concludes: “Yes, I had Teahupoo in the Champion Hurdle on Tuesday, who ran badly. In fact, they went too fast for him. He had won well in Ireland, but he will more than likely be switched to chasing next season.  Rivière d’Etel ran really well in the Arkle and Porticello also ran well in the JCB Triumph Hurdle and too will go chasing next year.”
