From Japan to the United States, fillies and mares bought at ARQANA’s Breeding Stock Sale have shone at the highest level thoughout the 2018 racing season. Out of Haras du Mezeray’s outstanding mare LUNE D’OR, for which Katsumi Yoshida paid €750,000 in 2010, FIEREMENT recently won the Kikuka Sho (Gr.1), the Japanese St. Leger. On the other side of the Pacific, A RAVING BEAUTY took the Grade 1 Longines Just A Games Stakes and First Lady Stakes before finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf last weekend. Offered from Ecurie des Monceaux as a racing prospect last year, she had been knocked down for €225,000 to Mandore International Agency. Fellow 2018 Group winners WELL TIMED, POLLARA, TORNIBUSH, DUBIOUS (AUS), CAPRI, CHILEAN, CITY LIGHT and OUR LAST SUMMER are also out of mares bought at the Deauville Breeding Stock Sale, as are the Stakes-winning juveniles BOITRON, CORAL BEACH, ALL THE KING’S MEN, HARMLESS etc.

The 2019 catalogue is made up of 1030 lots of which 505 broodmares, 183 fillies, 328 foals and two stallions. A further 12 Wild Cards are available for last minute entries.

Wertheimer & Frere’s finest families on offer

Wertheimer & Frere, who sell exclusively at Deauville each year, have already sold numerous future dams of Group winners at this auction. The most recent is this season’s Prix de Royaumont (Gr.3) winner POLLARA, out of BROOKLYN’S STORM, that was sold for €70.000 to Horse France during the 2011 edition.

This year, they will give buyers the opportunity to purchase 13 fillies and 12 mares from their best families, including SAHEL (lot 28), a sister to Group 1 winners SCHIAPARELLI, SAMUM and SALVE REGINA and the dam of SORTILEGE, in foal to Golden Horn; TIBERIAS (lot 50), a winning three-year-old half-sister by Galileo to dual Group 1 winner SILASOL; DESERTISTE (lot 112), the dam of SASPARELLA and a half-sister to MONDIALISTE, IMPRESSIONNANTE and ONLY ANSWER, carrying to New Approach; Listed winner and Group 3 placed FOREIGN TUNE (lot 151), a half-sister to IMPASSABLE and ATTENDU, in foal to Zoffany; as well as GRAVITEE (lot 159) a sister to INTELLO expecting her second foal by Wootton Bassett.

30 Mares and Fillies from the Aga Khan Studs

Having sold, amongst others, the dams of Group 1 winner CAPRI and this year’s Prix du Pin (Gr.3) scorer TORNIBUSH, the Aga Khan Studs send 16 mares and 14 fillies from their most prolific lines under the hammer. Of note are: TALISA (lot 5), a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner FIDELITE, sold in foal to Shalaa; SAWAKIYNA (lot 29), an unraced three-year-old by Sea The Stars out of Group 1 winner SAGAWARA; ZERKERIYA (lot 67), a half-sister to the champion ZARAVA expecting to Ulysses; as well as KASATANA (lot 176), the dam of Group 2 scorer KESAMPOUR and a half-sister to KASSANA, in foal to Dariyan.

Mouth-watering reduction sale from Haras de Colleville

Guy Pariente’s Haras de Colleville will offer 22 foals and broodmare as part of a culling process to maintain the size of his operation. The foals are headed by a Frankel colt, the first foal out of the Listed winner and Group performer RESTIANA (lot 138) and a Kingman half-brother (lot 142) to dual Group 3 winner and Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes 3rd GOKEN.

Broodmares include Montjeu’s daughter CHERRIYA (lot 185), the dam of two Group performers offered in foal to Kingman as well as last year’s Gr.3 Prix Miesque heroine SWEETY DREAM (lot 218), carrying her first foal by Kendargent.

Sisters to Champions in Ecurie des Monceaux draft

The vendor of A RAVING BEAUTY 12 months ago, Ecurie des Monceaux will consign  eight mares headed by MA CHERIE (lot 168), a half-sister to the multiple Grade 1 winner ZAGORA, in foal for the first time with a covering by Caravaggio; LET’S MISBEHAVE (lot 188), a half-sister to HIGH CHAPARRAL, in foal to War Front; PRAIRIE BLOSSOM (lot 118), a half-sister by Dalakhani to Group winners PRAIRIE STAR and PACIFIC RIM, carrying to Caravaggio for the first time, as well as NEPALI PRINCESS (lot 139), a half-sister to SHALAA, in foal to Invincible Spirit.

They will be accompanied by seven fillies including the black type performers FERALIA (lot 96) and MINT JULEP (lot 216).

JUST THE JUDGE’s filly foal by Dubawi amongst 62 lots from La Motteraye Consignment

Responsible for the biggest consignment in the sale made up of 27 foals, 19 mares et 16 fillies, La Motteraye Consignment will offer an outstanding foal, a filly by Dubawi out of dual Group 1 winner JUST THE JUDGE (lot 175). She is a sister to the top price at the 2018 August Yearling Sale, also presented by La Motteraye. Other standouts include: EMBROIDERED SILK (lot 33), a half-sister by Galileo to Group winners WILLIE CAZALS and JOANNA, in foal to Caravaggio; Group placed BELLIFLORE (lot 57), the dam of leading juvenile BOITRON, in foal to Ectot; Group placed HAPPY APPROACH (lot 117), carrying her first foal by Caravaggio; as well as INTERNATIONAL LOVE (lot 164), a half-sister to German champion IQUITOS.

17 fillies and broodmares from Godolphin

14 maiden mares and 3 mares in foal will be offered by Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, which has enjoyed a phenomenal season on the track. DAHLIA’S SPIRIT (lot 15) is a Dubawi granddaughter of Prix Vermeille (Gr.1) heroine MEZZO SOPRANO and half-sister to STRATHSPEY; CANTINIERE (lot 59) is by War Front out of the top class UP; while IRISH ABBBEY (lot 119) is an Invincible Spirit half-sister to the Group winners ULTRA and SYNOPSIS.

Ronald Rauscher brings a draft of 14 from Germany, headed by triple Group winner DELECTATION (lot 192), who boasts a rating of 110, as well as Group 3 winner and Group 2 placed PEACE IN MOTION (lot 163).

Dutch-born breeder Berend van Dalfsen, who boards a select draft of quality mares at Haras du Berlais, is another to operate an attractive reduction sale including ROSEY DE MEGEVE (lot 191), the dam of Group scorer REAL VALUE and a half-sister to LADY VETTORI, offered in foal to Siyouni, as well as a pair of well-bred Siyouni foals: a son of Group 3 winner BAL DE ROSE (lot 84) and a half-sister to Group 3 scorer REAL VALUE (lot 146).

Stall Salzburg offers two black type fillies with considerable paddock value in dual Group 2 winner NIGHT MUSIC (lot 195), a half-sister to the excellent NIGHT MAGIC currently rated 111, and CLEARLY (lot 135), a Listed performer by Invincible Spirit from the family of LAMMTARRA.

Other black type fillies set to go under the hammer feature dual Listed and Group placed AGAINST RULES (lot 80), offered from trainer Stephane Wattel; Prix de Turenne (L.) scorer LETTRE DE CHATEAU (lot 134), with a rating of 104, presented by Christophe Ferland; MAROUBRA (lot 217), the winner of the Prix de Liancourt (L.) this year for trainer Josephine Soudan, with a rating of 105. 

In-foal mares also include the Group winner PRINCESS ASTA (lot 155), a half-sister to ASK FOR THE MOON, from Haras de Grandcamp expecting for the first time to Kendargent, and KNYAZHNA (lot 179), the dam of SACRED LIFE from Haras de Montaigu carrying a brother or sister to the Prix Thomas Bryon winner.


Blue-Blooded Foals

Foals by Anodin, American Pharoah, Camelot, Dubawi, Frankel, Gleneagles, Gutaifan, Intello, No Nay Never, Sea The Stars, Shalaa, Showcasing, Siyouni, Wootton Bassett etc. are just some of the collection of 270 foals set to go under the hammer. Of these:

  • lot 113, a daughter of American Pharoah, the first foal out of Group placed DESIREE CLARY, from Haras du Quesnay.
  • lot 131, a son of Sea The Stars out of Italian Champion Two-Year-Old 2 FLY ON THE NIGHT, from Greenfield Consignment.

Munir/Souede Breeding Stock Dispersal headlines National Hunt Day

A purely National Hunt day, the Tuesday of the sale has produced the dams of several top jumpers, most recently Prix Cambaceres (Gr.1) winner BEAUMEC DE HOUELLE as well as SALDIER, A MI MANERA, FOOTPAD etc.

This year, it will play host to an exceptional dispersal of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede’s breeding stock. A total of 28 mares and fillies will be consigned by Haras du Lieu des Champs, headlined by GITANE DU BERLAIS (lot 934) and UNE ARTISTE (lot 938), both in foal to Martaline, MA FILLEULE (lot 932), as well as UTOPIE DES BORDES (lot 942), in foal to Balko.

Other well-bred fillies and mares include:

  • POPIN’S DU BERLAIS (lot 844), a sister to POP ART DU BERLAIS, in foal to Great Pretender for the first time from Haras du Berlais;
  • FELICIE (lot 848), a daughter of the top class mare PRINCESSE D’ANJOU expecting to Martaline from Haras de Commeaux;
  • TYFONA (lot 887), a winning half-sister to the very talented TUNIS, in-foal to ESTEJO, the sire of the former, from Haras de Grandcamp;
  • AVANGUARDIA (lot 911), the dam of Cheltenham Grade 1 winner LABAIK, from Haras d’Haspel in-foal to Doctor Dino;
  • AINSI VA LA VIE (lot 961), a Listed performer over hurdles in Ireland and half-sister to Gr.1 winner SOUS LES CIEUX, from Fairway Consignment;
  • Prix Lutteur III (L.) winner TISANE (989), from Guy Cherel in-foal to Joshua Tree;
  • DENNA (lot 995), a half-sister to dual Prix La Haye Jousselin scorer BIPOLAIRE, from Haras de Cercu expecting her first foal by Cocoriko;
  • LADY FIX (lot 1005), the dam of Grand-Steeple Chase de Compiegne (Gr.2) winner A MI MANERA, in-foal to Great Pretender from Haras d’Harcouel;
  • Listed scorer STAR LIGHT (lot 1017), offered in foal to Kapgarde by Elevage des Trois Rivieres;
  • MIND STORY (lot 1020), a half-sister to Gr.1 winning hurdler MASTER DINO, in-foal to The Anvil from Haras des Faunes.
  • BECQUASCENTHE (lot 1022), Listed placed at Auteuil and a half-sister to GRANDE HAYA, consigned by Haras de la Herbourgere expecting her first foal by Doctor Dino.

A selection of exciting foals make up the rest of the National Hunt session, with progeny of the likes of Authorized, Bathyrhon, Cocoriko, Doctor Dino, Great Pretender, Kapgarde, Martaline, No Risk At All, Saint des Saints, Turgeon etc.
