SUMMER SALE: from 29 June to 1st July 2016 375 horses for sale at Deauville

The Summer Sale will take place from Wednesday 29 June to Friday 1 July at the heart of the Elie de Brignac sales complex in Deauville.

The catalogue, available at, is made up of 375 lots, including 84 unraced two-year-olds bred for the flat, 79 two and three-year-old store horses, 2 stallion prospects, 66 broodmares and fillies and 144 horses in training on the flat and over jumps. 15 wild cards are still available in the sections dedicated to horses in training and broodmares and fillies coming out of training.

An unmissable event for talent spotters, the Summer Sale has produced numerous winners in both disciplines. As such, MONDIALISTE landed the Gr.1 Woodbine Mile before finishing second in the Gr.1 Breeders’Cup Mile behind champion American race mare Tepin. From a National Hunt perspective, the Aga Khan homebred and top price of last year’s sale ZUBAYR won first time out over hurdles when landing the Gr.2 Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at Kempton. Others worth a mention include SMASHING, brilliant winner of the Gr.2 Webster Cup Chase and Gr.2 Red Mills Chase, UN TEMPS POUR TOUT, who landed the Gr.3 Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, as well as DON POLI, who finished third in the Gr.1 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Flat-bred two-year-olds section

This first day of sale offers a section reserved for unraced two year olds bred to race on the flat by high profile stallions such as Acclamation, Bernardini, Bushranger, Dream Ahead, Dutch Art, Exceed And Excel, Fast Company, Hat Trick, Holy Roman Emperor, Iffraaj, Invincible Spirit, Kendargent, Kodiac, Lawman, Makfi, Myboycharlie, Pivotal, Pour Moi, Redoute’s Choice, Rock Of Gibraltar as well as Siyouni.

The sale also includes an attractive selection of two-year-olds by first season sires such as Born To Sea (3), Casamento (2), Excelebration (1), Frankel (1), Helmet (1), Power (2), Rajsaman (5), Rio De La Plata (1) and Tin Horse (1).

Two and three-year-old store horses section

The catalogue also offers a selection of two and three-year-old store horses by some of the best National Hunt stallions such as Al Namix (2), Blue Bresil (3), Dream Well (1), Great Pretender (1), Irish Wells (4), Kapgarde (3), Martaline (6), Montmartre (1), Network (5), No Risk At All (4), Poliglote (2), Saint des Saints (2), Turgeon (1) as well as Walk In The Park (1).

From a pedigree point of view, stand outs include:

  • Lot 87, presented by the Haras du Buff, a result of the mating between leading National Hunt sire Saint des Saints and En La Cruz, Listed winner and multiple Group placed at Auteuil, from the family of a champion VOY POR USTEDES, winner of five Grade 1 races over jumps.
  • Lots 108 and 132 presented by Elevage Jacques Cyprès. The first named is a son of Saddler Maker out of a full sister to CHUCHOTEUSE and WHISPER, dual winner of the 1 Liverpool Hurdle. Lot 132 is a son of Network out of the Listed winner QUIZAS JOLIE, from the family of champions Al Capone II and The Fellow.
  • Lot 119, presented by Goldford Stud, a Martaline half-brother to dual Listed winner NEWS REEL, from the prestigious Wildenstein family of NEWNESS, NO RISK AT ALL, NICKNAME and N’AVOUE JAMAIS.
  • Lot 120, presented by Irène Scheldt, a son of Poliglote from the family of NEWNESS, NO RISK AT ALL, NICKNAME, and N’AVOUE JAMAIS.
  • Lot 121, presented by Ecurie Jean-Noël Sousa, a full sister to VIRAK (AQ), winner of the 2 December Novices’ Chase at Doncaster and third in the Gr.1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton.
  • Lot 125, presented by the Haras de la Source, a Walk In The Park half-brother to ARGENTIQUE, winner of the 3 Prix de Clermont-Tonnerre and third in the Gr.1 Prix de la Haye Jousselin.
  • Lot 137, presented by the Haras du Saz, an Al Namix APQS from the family of USUAL SUSPECTS, winner of three Group races including the1 Prix Alain du Breil.
  • Lot 146, presented by the Haras du Patis, a son of Turgeon from the family of champion MID DANCER.

Broodmares and fillies

For this latest renewal of the Summer Sale ARQANA has created a section dedicated to fillies and to in foal broodmares. This new addition to the sale gives breeders an extra opportunity to put well bred fillies or young mares with attractive coverings on the market without having to wait for the Breeding Stock Sale. This new section has generated a huge amount of interest, as can be seen from the quality of the mares and fillies on offer.

The catalogue offers broodmares and fillies from establishments such as the Wertheimer Brothers, the Haras du Mézeray, the Haras d’Etreham, the Haras des Capucines, Gestüt Brümmerhof as well as Gestüt Etzean.


Among the fillies coming out of training, standouts include:

  • AKUA’RILL (lot 164, presented by the Haras d’Ombreville), a Tiger Hill half-sister to AKUA’DA, winner of the2 German 1000 Guineas.
  • EXPERTE (lot 167, presented by Wertheimer & Frère), a daughter of High Chaparral from the prolific black type family of AGATHE, AQUARELLISTE and ARTISTE ROYAL.
  • BE A GOOD ONE (lot 169, presented by Freddy Head), a full sister to Group 1 winners BAILA ME (Preis Von Europa) and BE FABULOUS (Prix Royal Oak).
  • MAISONS (lot 198, presented by Ellie Lellouche), a daughter of Le Havre, a winner at two from the family of champion filly NATAGORA.
  • MAYAN SILVER (lot 199, presented by Henri-Alex Pantall), a daughter of Kendargent, and a first-time out winner at two from the family of Group winners ESOTERIQUE, RUSSIAN HOPE, ARCHANGE D’OR and RUSSIAN CROSS.
  • BELPHEGORIA (lot 206, presented by Jean-Pierre Gauvin), a winning daughter of Teofilo out of the Listed winner PIETRA SANTA.
  • Lot 215, presented by the Haras d’Etreham, a Henrythenavigator half sister to high class performers STARLISH and STAROS.
  • TAMASHEQ (lot 219, presented by Simone Brogi), a daughter of Manduro out of TAMAZIRTE, dual Group winner and placed in the1 Prix de Diane.

Gestüt Etzean will offer ELEA (lot 187), a winning Lord of England half-sister to the Group 1 placed ECLAIR DE LUNE and MONCLAIRE (lot 201), a full sister to MONAMI, winner of the Diana Trial (Gr.2) and the Preis Der Winterkönigin (Gr.3).

In foal broodmares

Wertheimer & Frère will present two mares in foal to Anodin :

  • VRAIMENT ROUGE (lot 209), a winning daughter of Red Ransom out of a full sister to SPECIAL QUEST, winner of the Critérium de Saint-Cloud (1)
  • COMEDIA (lot 178), a mare from the family of Group winners CORRAZONA, OLMODAVOR and SLOW PACE.

Among the mares consigned by the Haras du Mézeray, there are two very well bred Shadwell mares:

  • WADYHATTA (lot 224, presented in foal to Authorized), a two-time winner, this daughter of Cape Cross is from the family of champions TAMAYUZ, ANABAA BLUE and URBAN SEA.
  • THANAA (lot 218, presented in foal to Mawatheeq), a daughter of New Approach who is closely related to Group winners TURTLE BOW, TURTLE BOWL and AGE OF AQUARIUS.

The Haras du Hoguenet will offer five mares including:

  • MAJESTIC JASMINE (lot 197, presented in foal for the first time to Youmzain). This Listed winner in Germany is a daughter of New Approach out of MAJESTIC ROI, winner of the Sun Chariot Stakes (1).
  • QUIET QUEEN (lot 202, presented in foal to Anodin). This is a full sister to MASTERY, winner the St Leger (1) and the Hong Kong Vase (Gr.1).

Among the four mares consigned by the Haras des Eclos, two of note are:

  • SHE SAY’S (lot 174, presented in foal to Hunter’s Light), an Oasis Dream half sister to In Chambers, second in the 3 Prix de Guiche and the Gr.3 Prix Daphnis.
  • BELLE DE BERIEZ (lot 211, presented in foal to Montmartre), a Special Kaldoun half sister to the Listed winner and multiple Group placed at Auteuil ROYAL PALOIS.

Among the more attractive profiles other standouts include:

  • COUNTRY LANES (lot 175, presented in foal for the first time to Stormy River by Jedburgh Stud), a full sister to dual Group winner ALL IS VANITY.
  • TZAARINE (lot 182, presented in foal for the first time to Martaline by the Haras de Montaigu), a Turtle Bowl half sister to DALY DALY, winner of the 3 Grand Prix de Vichy.
  • ELLA’S HONOUR (lot 183, presented in foal for the first time to Wootton Bassett by the Haras d’Etreham), a Makfi half sister to AZABARA (Prix des Lilas L.) and a winner at three.
  • JEWEL OF THE NILE (lot 186, presented in foal for the first time to Zanzibari by the Haras des Capucines), an Authorized half-sister to DIAMOND TANGO, winner of the 2 Prix de Pomone and placed several times at Group level.
  • MISCHKA (lot 196, presented in foal to Wootton Bassett by J.K Thoroughbred), a full sister to3 Grand Prix de Vichy winner and five time Group placed HAPSBURG.
  • THAT’S NELLIE (lot 188, presented in foal for the first time to Saint des Saints by The Channel Consignment). Placed four times at Auteuil, this daughter of Martaline out of EN LA CRUZ is from the family of five time Grade 1 winner over fences VOY POR USTEDES.
  • PESCARA (lot 204, presented in foal for the first time to Amaron by Gestüt Etzean), a Samum half sister to PROTECTIONIST, winner of the 1 Melbourne Cup.
  • FULGURANCE MATHAN (lot 213, presented in foal for the first time to Kapgarde by the Haras de la Hêtraie), a Ballingarry half sister to champion racehorse over fences ODEILLO DU MATHAN.
  • MISS STORMA (lot 214, presented in foal to Rio de la Plata by La Motteraye Consignment), an Air Chief Marshall half sister to COUP DE THEATRE, winner of the  Prix Omnium II and placed in the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat.

Stallion prospects

Also due to go through the ring are the two Group 3 winners LORESHO (lot 233) and KARAKTAR (lot 232), both presented by the Aga Khan Studs as stallion prospects.

Horses in Training Section

144 horses in training on the flat and over jumps will also go through the ring including representatives from some of the most successful names in French racing such as Pia Brandt, Fabrice Chappet, Nicolas Clément, Tony Clout, Rodolphe Collet, Mikel Delzangles, Yan Durepaire, André Fabre, Christophe Ferland, Françis-Henri Graffard, John Hammond, Freddy Head, Carlos Laffon-Parias, Ellie Lellouche, Henri-Alex Pantall, Didier Prod’homme, François Rohaut, Jean-Claude Rouget and Philippe Sogorb.

10 representatives of the prestigious Wertheimer Brothers outfit will be presented for sale as well as a draft of seven horses hailing from the Aga Khan Studs, including the Listed placed GREEN SWEET (lot 336), SARYSHAGANN (lot 352) and ZAFIRO (lot 369).

Among the horses running over jumps, standouts include horses trained by Nicolas Bertran de Balanda, Arnaud Chaillé-Chaillé, Guy Cherel, Patrick Chevillard, Guillaume Macaire, François Nicolle, Marcel Rolland as well as Donatien Sourdeau de Beauregard.

Wild Cards

15 Wild Cards are still available at the heart of the sections dedicated to broodmares and fillies and to horses in training.
