The December Breeding Stock Sale is the highlight of a 2014 season full of records and successes. The eight sales which have been held to date have all witnessed increases while ARQANA graduates have bagged 12 Group 1 races and 113 Stakes races. The very last sale of the year which offers mares, fillies, foals, stallions and stallion shares, will take place this year from Saturday 6 to Tuesday 9 December and will see 976 lots go through the ring at Deauville. This year’s sale plays host to some very high quality profiles, such as 130 mares which have performed at Listed and/or Group level, 57 Stakes producers and 77 sisters to Group 1 winners. Headlining these are three mares of exceptional quality in SAMBA BRAZIL, a beautifully bred young mare consigned in foal for the first time to Dubawi, as well as the top class ALTERITE and XCELLENCE who have both won at Group 1 level.
High class fillies and mares
Each year the breeding stock sale represents a unique opportunity to buy fillies and mares hailing from renowned breeding operations such as the Aga Khan Studs, Wertheimer & Frère, Shadwell, Darley, the Haras du Bois Roussel, the Haras du Quesnay, the Haras des Capucines, the Haras du Mézeray, the Haras de la Louvière, Ecurie des Monceaux, etc.
The Aga Khan Studs will once again be well armed this year with a contingent of 34 fillies and mares from some of their best families. Standouts among these include lot 204 BEHKARA, winner of the Prix de Chaudenay (Gr.2), and placed several times at Group 1 level before producing Grand Prix de Paris (Gr.1) winner Behkabad, Listed winner and Group 2 placed Beheshtam, and the three year old Behesht, recent winner of the Prix Turenne (L.), as well as the winner MANSERA (lot 199), a five year old mare in foal for the first time to Dalakhani, and whose brother Manighar won three Group 1 races in Australia. Added to these three mares, three beautifully bred three year old fillies will go through the ring. Indeed SAYFOONISA (lot 8) is a half sister to Sageburg, who won the Prix d’Ispahan (Gr.1) before becoming a stallion, while Manduro’s daughter SHAZANA (lot 152) is a half sister to the excellent Shareta, who won the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr.1) and the Prix Vermeille (Gr.1). A daughter of Mr. Greeley, DOULMERA (lot 104) is from the family of Group 1 winners Dalakhani, Daylami, Dalkala and the very good Dolniya, a three year old filly who won the Prix de Malleret (Gr.2) this year and finished third in the Prix Vermeille (Gr .1) and was fifth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr.1).
The prestigious Wertheimer & Frère operation will present 17 of its homebreds at Deauville, including lot 144, SILVER RAIN, a Listed winning Rainbow Quest mare and already the dam of Baahama, who won the Prix Charles Laffitte (L.) and was second in the Prix d’Aumale (Gr.3), and of Opposite, who was Group 1 placed in Germany. She is consigned in foal to Oasis Dream. The Wertheimer brothers will also offer the four year old INTIMHIR (lot 211), a half sister to Group 1 winner Sortilège, out of Sahel, herself a full sister to Schiaparelli, Samum and Salve Regina. Lot 222 PARLE MOI is also from an exceptional family as she is out of the Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr.1) winner Pas de Réponse. The Wertheimers will also offer BARBADE (lot 192), a daughter of the young mare Balladeuse, winner of the Prix de Royallieu (Gr.2) and a sister to Plumania (Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud Gr.1) as well as EMPREINTE (lot 52) a three year old filly who finished third in the Prix du Bois (Gr.3) last year.
Le Haras du Bois Roussel, responsible for the Wildenstein family champions, will offer 18 fillies and mares including the three year old BLARNEY STONE (lot 201), a Peintre Célèbre half sister to the Classic winner Beauty Parlour, the four year old SAKARYA (lot 148), a daughter of the matriarch Saganeca who produced Sagamix and Sagacity as well as Sage et Jolie (dam of Sageburg) and Shastye (dam of Secret Gesture), the three year old AQUA BELLA (lot 69), by Oasis Dream out of the great champion Aquarelliste, winner of the Prix de Diane (Gr.1), Prix Vermeille (Gr.1), Prix Ganay (Gr.1) and second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr.1). Consigned as a filly coming out of training the four year old TUNKWA (lot 31), is a Listed winner rated 107 out of a sister to the dual Group 1 winner Amorama.
Elsewhere, the Breeding Stock Sale also offers young Group and Listed winning fillies and mares such as SAMBA BRAZIL (lot 196), a daughter of Teofilo consigned in foal for the first time to the highly sought after Dubawi by the Haras du Mézeray. A Group 3 winner over a mile having raced from 2 to 4 years, this mare is from one of the best families in Europe, that of the matriarch Sacarina, who was responsible for the aforementioned Group 1 winners Schiaparelli, Samum, Salve Regina as well as the dams of Sea The Moon and Sortilège. Samba Brazil is herself a half sister to Group 1 winner Seismos and to the Preis der Diana (Gr.1) placed Soberania. The Haras des Capucines will consign the four year old filly ALTERITE (lot 188) on behalf of Martin Schwartz, a daughter of Literato and closely related to Célimène who made her name in France and in the United States. At the age of three in the US she was a class above her rivals in the Garden City Stakes (Gr.1) before picking up places in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, all this after having had a successful career in France punctuated most notably by a second place in the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr.1) and a third place dans le Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr.1) at two. Also consigned by the Haras des Capucines, the three year old filly XCELLENCE has a comparable itinerary to that of stablemate Altérité. In France, she lifted the Prix Imprudence (Gr.3) this year before finishing third in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr.1) and the Prix de Diane (Gr.1) and then taking off for the States where she was placed three times at Group is 1 and 2 level on three occasions. The Haras de la Reboursière et de Montaigu will present 17 mares and foals including the three year old STELLAR PATH (lot 184) a daughter of Astronomer Royal who in the care of Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, lifted the Prix des Réservoirs (Gr.3) at two and picked up two Listed races. She is also a full sister to Weary (ex Sir Patrick Moore), a horse who has been successful in Group races in Australia. Another talented filly BOCAIUVA (lot 85), a three year old daughter of Teofilo consigned by the Haras d’Etreham, has just finished an excellent second in the Prix de Flore (Gr.3) having recently run out the impressive winner of the Prix Charles Laffitte (L.) at Chantilly. Trained by Eric Libaud, the six year old HIPPY (lot 225) has six victories to her name including the Grand Prix de Vichy (Gr.3) and the Vase d’Argent (L.). Trainer Alain Bonin will present the Listed winner PIANA (lot 132), a Doyen half sister to the Group 2 winner Grandcamp, from the family of champion Fame And Glory.
Elsewhere two other young Group 3 winning broodmares stand out in the catalogue. Consigned in foal to Dansili by the Haras de Saint Pair, VIA MEDICI (lot 172), a young mare by Medicean out of the Group 3 winner Via Milano, won the Prix de Lieurey (Gr.3). SKIA (lot 167), presented in foal to Leroidesanimaux by the Haras du Quesnay, won the Prix Fille de l’Air (Gr.3) at Toulouse. She is also a sister to Tropaios, winner of the Singapore Gold Cup (L.).
The 2014 Breeding Stock Sale will also offer a plethora of young mares whose siblings made their mark at Group 1 level. This is the case of the very well bred ABYS (lot 171), a four year old mare by Montjeu out of the excellent Dibenoise (Kendor) dam of Group 1 winners Recital and Corre Caminos, both full brothers to Abys, and to the Group 2 winner Racinger. The Pia Brandt trained filly herself was placed twice at Listed level in Germany. Alain de Royer-Dupré will present ZOTILLA (lot 175), a Zamindar half sister to the talented Flotilla, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr.1) and the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr.1), while Coulonces Consignment will come to Deauville with NIDINA (lot 12), a half sister to the triple Group winner and dual Group 1 placed Joanna, presented in foal to Fastnet Rock. As for IGNIS AWAY (lot 206) presented by the Haras d’Etreham in foal for the first time to the exciting Mastercraftsman, she can boast being a sister to the exceptional Danedream, winner of five Group 1 races including the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Three stallions from the French National Studs
Three thoroughbred and anglo arabian stallions will be present at Deauville under the French National Studs banner. A 21/50 share in the well-known MONTMARTRE (lot 841) will be for sale. This son of Montjeu out of Artistique was champion three year old in France thanks most notably to his magnificent success in the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr.1). His first crop of three year olds includes the very good filly Amour A Papa, second to Avenir Certain in the Prix de Diane (Gr.1). Montmartre will be followed through the ring by GRIS DE GRIS (lot 842), a son of Slickly who was successful on numerous occasions at Group level and whose first offspring are now two. The Anglo Arabian OLZARTE DE COLLONGUES completes the trio of stallions from the National Studs.
A profusion of attractive foals
245 foals will be led through the ring during the four days of the breeding stock sale. They are by proven and promising stallions such as DUTCH ART, ELUSIVE CITY, EXCEED AND EXCEL, EXCHANGE RATE, FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, KENDARGENT, LAWMAN, LE HAVRE, LOPE DE VEGA, MARTALINE, MASTERCRAFTSMAN, MOTIVATOR, MYBOYCHARLIE, NEW APPORACH, OASIS DREAM, PIVOTAL, POLIGLOTE, SAINT DES SAINTS, SEA THE STARS, SINNDAR, SIYOUNI, ZAMINDAR as well as by first crop stallions including BATED BREATH, CASAMENTO, DRAGON PULSE, EXCELEBRATION, HARBOUR WATCH, JUKEBOX JURY, MAYSON, NATHANIEL, NO RISK AT ALL, POWER, RAJSAMAN, REDOUTE’S CHOICE, RIO DE LA PLATA, SEPOY, TIN HORSE.
Among the more attractive profiles stand outs include two foals consigned by the Haras d’Ombreville, lot 9, an Invincible Spirit half sister to the German Listed winners Monblue and Salon Soldier, and lot 118, a daughter of Henrythenavigator and the first foal out of the triple Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed in Germany Elle Danzig. This duo is completed by lot 65 presented by the Haras du Petit Tellier, an Oasis Dream half sister to the Listed winner and Group 1 placed Ana Americana, and by lot 92, a son of Dutch Art consigned by the Haras de Saint-Pair and a brother to Vadamos, winner at Listed level this year. The catalogue also includes lot 110, presented by the Haras des Capucines, a daughter of Sea The Stars and the first foal out of Derivatives, a daughter of the Nassau Stakes (Gr.1) winner Favourable Terms as well as lot 173 presented by the Elevage de Tourgeville, a Redoute’s Choice half sister to Loi, winner of the Prix de Condé (Gr.3) at two.
National Hunt mares and foals offered on the Tuesday
As always, the Tuesday will have a strong National Hunt flavour. It will offer mares in foal to proven stallions and young sires with a National Hunt profile such as BLUE BRESIL, FUISSE, IRISH WELLS, KAPGARDE, MARTALINE, MUHTATHIR, NO RISK AT ALL, POLIGLOTE, SAINT DES SAINTS, TURGEON.
Among the more attractive profiles will be Group 1 winners LA SEGNORA (lot 857) and FLEUR D’AINAY (lot 926). Presented by the Haras du Lieu des Champs, the first named has a magnificent race record including eight victories and 15 places over jumps. In just one season in 2011, the daughter of Turgeon picked up three Group races at Auteuil, the Prix du Président de la République (Gr.3), the Grand Prix d’Automne (Gr.1) and just 15 days later the Prix Léon Olry-Roederer (Gr.2). Younger than her, FLEUR D’AINAY, a four year old by Poliglote, has a remarkable record over fences at Auteuil. In the spring she finished second in the Prix Fleuret (Gr.3), then third in the Prix Jean Stern (Gr.2) won by Laterano. In the Prix Ferdinand Dufaure (Gr.1), she reversed placings authoritatively with the latter, winning by a classy two and a half lengths. Consigned by Xavier Leredde as a filly coming out of training she is also well bred being a half sister to the excellent horses Crystal d’Ainay, Etoile d’Ainay and Flower des Champs. Let’s also mention SACARINE (lot 873), a mare consigned by the Haras du Mesnil in foal to Saint des Saints and a full sister to Turgot (Turgeon), winner of the Prix La Haye Jousselin (Gr.1) and the Prix Fernand Dufaure (Gr.1), as well as FOUR ROSES SUCCES (lot 920 presented by the Haras du Lieu des Champs), a five year old mare in foal for the first time to Al Namix and the half sister to Balder Succes, winner of the Maghull Novices’ Chase (Gr.1) in the Spring at Aintree.
Looking at the National Hunt bred foals standouts include lot 860 presented by the Haras du Hoguenet, a Poliglote half sister to the 2014 Prix Finot (L.) winner Vintage, lot 924, a Kapgarde half brother to champion Gémix presented by the Haras de Grandcamp, as well as 961, a filly consigned by the Haras du Hoguenet by Saint des Saints out of the young mare Mood, a Listed winner at Auteuil, or even lot 968, a foal also presented by the Haras du Hoguenet and a son of Saint des Saints out of the multiple Listed placed Orcantara.
