LIVELY NATIONAL HUNT SESSION CAPS PHENOMENAL BREEDING STOCK SALE

Posted on | Posted in news - de

The final session of the 2017 Breeding Stock Sale saw some buoyant trade, fueled by the abundance of fine National Hunt bloodlines on offer. 81% of the 138 fillies, mares and foals on offer changed hands for an average price of €18,811, up 17% from a year ago. The aggregate for the day posted a 16% jump from 2016 at €2,144,500.

Blue-blooded Stakes winner to Highflyer for €140,000

Shanon du Berlais (lot 912) combined victory at Listed level over hurdles with the finest French National Hunt bloodlines and an elite cover, a combination that was not lost on the many breeders on attendance. It was Highflyer Bloodstock’s David Minton who offered the winning bid of €140,000 for the nine-year-old daughter of Turgeon who was carrying to Saint Des Saints. Shanon du Berlais won at Listed level over fences and she is a half-sister to the top class MADISON DU BERLAIS, HILTON DU BERLAIS and JAMESON DU BERLAIS. Another half-sister, HOUSTON DU BERLAIS, commanded €86,000 in this ring a year ago.

She is for one of our clients, John Lightfoot, for whom we consign foals” explained Juliet Minton. “She is a beautiful mare from a top-class family and we will try and breed her to Martaline. She will be boarded at Richard Powell’s Haras du Lieu des Champs”.

Turgeon mare Ladies Wish to Xavier Papot for €80,000

Haras du Mesnil’s LADIES WISH (lot 820) came to the ring with some strong credentials and Xavier Papot, bidding alongside Hervé Bunel of Agence FIPS, had to go to €80,000 to bring home the eleven-year-old grey. A winner over fences herself, she is a full sister to three highly talented jumpers including Gr.3 Prix Fleuret scorer LADIES CHOICE and Listed-winning hurdler LADYTOWN. The star of the family is the Gr.1 Prix La Haye Jousselin hero SHANNON ROCK, also by Turgeon, and Ladies Wish’s Doctor Dino cover added even more appeal to the package.

The well-travelled three-time Group 1 winner has made quite a splash at stud, producing the Stakes winners on the flat GOLDEN LEGEND, STYLE ICON and PALINODIE as well as several top class jumpers headed by the impressive Gr.1 Prix Cambacérès scorer MASTER DINO, Gr.1 Henry VIII Novices‘ Chase winner SCEAU ROYAL, progressive racemare LA BAGUE AU ROI etc.

Generally speaking, broodmares boasting solid pedigrees together with attractive coverings proved in high demand throughout the day, with 8 of them commanding €50,000 or more, a threshold that was only reached three times a year ago.

The Listed-winning daughter of Saint Des Saints BETE A BON DIEU (lot 933), offered by Haras de Saint-Voir in foal to Authorized, brought a final bid of €62,000 from Kern Lillingston Bloodstock. STAR FLIGHT (lot 828) and BOSTON DU BERLAIS (lot 913), both in foal to the up and coming Masked Marvel, sold for €55,000 and 52,000 respectively. NICKELLE (lot 841), a Listed winner both on the flat and over hurdles carrying to Montmartre went the way of Remi Boucret for €55,000.

Unexposed stallion SHAMALGAN to join Grandcamp on €135K bid

Shamalgan has become something of an old friend for the grounds men at ARQANA as he was making his sixth appearance in the sales ring today, once again to a successful outcome. This time he was offered by Andriy Ostapchuk’s Greenfield Consignment, having stood three seasons at stud – at Haras du Lion in France in 2014 and 2015, and in 2017 at Haras de Strelice in the Czech Republic, with a return to training in between!

His first crop of only 31 registered foals has lifted the two-year-old winners ANIMA ROCK, AIYANA ROSE and EPIC ADVENTURE from only 6 runners, and the former has gone on to take 2nd in the L. Criterium du Becquet.

This is quite a remarkable record from very limited opportunities, and a chance that German owner-breeder Simon Springer of Dabirsim fame wasn’t going to miss out on. Racing manager Daniel Haeser bid up to €135,000 to get the better of Guy Petit and explained: “Mr. Springer has been following the stallion for two years and was very impressed with his first two-year-old runners. We are delighted to have bought him and will send him to Haras de Grandcamp, where Dabirsim also stands. We will support him with our own mares as well as promote him actively to outside breeders.”

2017 Breeding Stock sale sets new records across the board

The entire set of figures posted by the 2017 renewal of the Breeding Stock Sale was unforeseen. The aggregate broke the €30 million barrier for the first time in the sale’s history, reaching €31,783,000 which represented a 36% climb from 2016. The average price rocketed 22% to €45,444 and the clearance rate improved to almost 80%.

Looking back five years, the increase is even more spectacular, showing a 60% hike in the sale’s turnover and 39% for the sale’s average.

ARQANA CEO Eric Hoyeau delivered the following assessment of the overall sale: “Trade has been nothing short of phenomenal over the last four days and most importantly demand was strong at every level of the markets. We didn’t lose momentum as we progressed through the sale, and this is down primarily to the quality of stock brought to the market by our vendors, as well as to the hard work produced by our international representatives with the skillful support of the ARQANA and FRBC teams. Together, we left no stone unturned whether in Japan, America, Australia, Australia, New Zealand, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Northern Africa and of course on both sides of the Channel. We wish to thank all the buyers who supported the sale this week and trust that the seeds have now been sown for French bloodlines to continue to produce classy winners across the world and in both disciplines.”
