ARQANA GRADUATES LAND TWO DERBIES IN AS MANY DAYS

Posted on | Posted in news

24 hours after August Yearling Sale purchase WINGS OF EAGLES became the first graduate of the Deauville sales ring to ever winEpsom’s Blue Ribband, Al Shaqab Racing’s BRAMETOT completed a Classic double in two ways by landing the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club in breathtaking style, three weeks after snatching the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) in similarly gritty fashion.

WINGS OF EAGLES was bred and consigned by Gilles and Aliette Forien’s Haras de Montaigu and became the first French-bred horse to win the Derby since the great Sea-Bird back in 1965. Out of the Poule d’Essai Pouliches 3rd Ysoldina, he was snapped up for €220,000 by M.V. Magnier at the 2015 August Yearling Sale.

Among the less-fancied of the Ballydoyle sextet, he was ridden of the pace by the little-known Padraig Beggy but swooped late to overhaul his stablemate Cliffs Of Moher and race favourite Cracksman, in style reminiscent of his own sire Pour Moi.

BRAMETOT, who was consigned as a foal by Haras du Logis and bought by Gérard Augustin-Normand’s racing and bloodstock manager Sylvain Vidal for €26,000 at the 2015 Breeding Stock Sale, faced a different race scenario, starting as the odds-on fav ourite on the back of his impressive Deauville success. Jumping out awkwardly from the rail, the son of first crop sire Rajsaman was still second last turning for home, with about eight lengths to make up on the front-runners, and only a devastating turn of foot enabled him to collar Andre Fabre’s Waldgeist in the shadow of the post.

BRAMETOT is the sixth winner of the Prix du Jockey Club over the past decade to have been purchased at ARQANA, meaning that the auction house has provided the winner of France’s greatest Classic every other year since its inception in 2006.

ARQANA President Eric Hoyeau reflected on a stellar weekend for the Deauville-based sales company: “This weekend was nothing short of a historical moment for ARQANA. The Epsom winning post has been the proverbial yardstick of racing excellence since the days of the great Federico Tesio and it is a landmark achievement for our company, after only eleven years in operation, to have sold the first winner of the great race ever bought in the Deauville sales ring. That Wings Of Eagles was bred and consigned by the Forien family’s Haras de Montaigu, who are amongst ARQANA’s most faithful vendors, and bought by our friends of Coolmore, who have also been great patrons of our sales over the years, made it even more special. Brametot completing a Derby double is just unique. He has been an extremely talented though exhuberant racehorse from day one and it has taken all Jean-Claude Rouget’s astute handling to model him into a dual Classic winner. We are also thrilled for all his connections, Gérard Augustin-Normand, Sylvain Vidal and the Al Shaqab Racing team, who are all almost next-door neighbours of ARQANA and with whom we have had close ties for many years. Victories like these give a meaning to all the hard work produced on a daily basis by breeders, trainers, stud and stable staff, and to the consistent investments consented by owners in our sport. We are hugely grateful to them and the horses for such memorable moments.”
